Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy

Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a form of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) that provides radiation to be delivered in the form of an arc. VMAT treatment uses the same basic methods, such as intensity modulation and reverses planning with IMRT, with the exception of applying arc-shaped motion around the target volume.

Treatment according to the IMRT application, one or more full or half arc movements can be treated during the treatment in order to provide the treatment that will provide the most appropriate dose distribution in the target to be treated. An important advantage of the VMAT implementation is that it can be much faster than a fixed field IMRT application, usually for a single arc or even for a multi-arc plan. This reduction in treatment time may be an important advantage in the destruction of tumor cells radiobiologically.
